LFA Amateur Shield – Round 1
Coppull United FC hosted fierce rivals Euxton Villa in the 1st round of the LFA Amateur Shield in what would prove to be their best performance of the season to date!
Coppull started with Joe Leather in goal, a back 4 of Cam Culshaw, Dave Parker, Jack Wright and Ben Morris. In midfield it was Jay Briody, Brayden Shaw and Daniel Fishwick in central midfield and they were flanked by Jordan Bentham on the left and the returning Jimmy MacIver on the right. Up top was Nat Lindley. The substitutes bench contained Cam Murphy, Jimmy Hamer, Nathan Bibby and Conor Whitaker.
Coppull started the game like a house on fire with a free-flowing move involving Fishwick, McIver, Lindley, Shaw resulted in Jordan Bentham being played in behind on the left-hand side of the goal and he cut inside before hitting a curling effort which went in off the far post. 1 nil to Coppull after 40 seconds on the clock. The initiative was almost handed straight back to Euxton after a misplaced pass from Fishwick found George Davies who hit a curling shot onto the outside of the post. The game then settled down after a frantic start with some good football being played by both sides. Coppull doubled their lead following a slick counter attacking move when McIver was played through and he coolly slotted under the Euxton number 1 to make it 2-0 to the home side. Two-nil quickly became three-nil as Euxton had a nightmare mix up in defence, which resulted in McIver firing the ball in from a yard out. Half time and Coppull had took a commanding three nil lead.
The second half started with Euxton coming out the blocks quickly however some excellent defensive work from Culshaw, Parker, Wright and Morris ensured that Coppull maintained a clean sheet in spite of the Euxton onslaught. It was Coppull who actually got the next goal as a Shaw free kick eluded the Euxton Villa defence and it was that man again, Jimmy McIver who headed home for his hattrick to make it 4-nil Coppull, with little over 55 minutes on the clock. Coppull introduced Hamer, Bibby and Murphy to help see out the game with fresh legs. It was substitute Jimmy Hamer however who gave away a soft penalty, which allowed Euxton to gain a consolation goal through Pat Bibby. Joe Leather was called upon to make a great block from Darr who hit a shot on the turn from close range.
Coppull rode out the rest of the game by defending astutely, putting their bodies on the line when needed and staying well organised as a team to ensure an emphatic win over their near rivals and progression to the next round of the LFA, where they have been drawn at home to Manchester-based side Pennington.
Next up Coppull return to league action and face the long journey up to Cumbria to face Whitehaven.
